Robert Thaler Ph.D | Distinguished Professor, Extension Swine Specialist for SDSU

About the Speakers.

Dr. Robert Thaler

Dr. Bob Thaler grew up on a diversified family farm in Wagner SD and received his BS and MS degrees from South Dakota State University and his Ph.D. in Swine Nutrition from Kansas State University in 1988. He returned to SD as Extension Swine Specialist and has held various positions, including Assistant Experiment Station Director, Agriculture and Natural Resources Program Leader for Extension, and SDSU’s Animal and Range Sciences department head. 

He currently serves as Extension Swine Specialist and focuses on helping pork producers and students in the state and region with the responsible growth of the swine industry.  He focused on production-based research and was involved with the funding and building of the new $7 million Swine Teaching-Research-Extension Center at SDSU.  In 2018 he received a Fulbright scholarship to work at the Vietnam National University of Agriculture in Hanoi and was named an SDSU Distinguished Professor in 2021.   He has consulted extensively in the last 30 years with the US Soybean Export Council and the US Grains Council in China, Southeast Asia, and other parts of the world.  Bob & his wife Karen have 3 children and 6 grandchildren.

Zach Smith | Assistant Professor, SDSU

Zach Smith

Zach Smith has served as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Animal Science and as the Faculty Supervisor of the Ruminant Nutrition Center (RNC) of the South Dakota Agricultural Experiment Station in Brookings, SD since July of 2018.

Smith earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Animal Production from Texas Tech University. He received a Master of Science Degree under the direction of Dr. Robbi Pritchard in Feedlot Nutrition and Management from South Dakota State University and a Doctor of Philosophy degree under the direction of Dr. Bradley Johnson in Feedlot Cattle Nutrition and Muscle Biology from Texas Tech University.

Zach has a 70/30 split of research and teaching at South Dakota State University.  Zach’s research program is focused on nutrition and management interventions that enhance growing and finishing beef cattle production. The Smith Lab has extensive experience in determining the feeding value of novel cereal grains and corn-milling (dry and wet) bio-refinery products fed to feedlot cattle. 

Warren Rusche | Assistant Professor & Extension Feedlot Specialist, SDSU

Warren Rusche

Warren Rusche currently serves as the Extension Feedlot Specialist for South Dakota State University, with prior Extension experience at the county level as well as a Cow/Calf Field Specialist. Prior to returning to SDSU in 2011, he co-managed his family’s cow-calf and backgrounding business. He holds a Ph.D. and B.S. degrees in Animal Science from South Dakota State University and an M.S. degree in Animal Science from Kansas State University.
