NCI Video Production | Apr. 2023 Update

April sure has flown by quickly in terms of video production—especially with three April snow days crunching down the timeline. The most defining trait of April for the NCI is the kickoff month of courses. It is the last calendar month before “course season,” so there is much prepping to be done before the summer pace picks up speed.

Course Videos:

NCI courses moved online in 2020-2021 due to the pandemic. While the in-person courses have resumed, the online ones are here to stay. The top three online courses on the video agenda include the following: Sourdough Baking, Durum Foods, and Feedmilling 101.

Check out the lecture recording setup in the NCI lobby.

If you’ve been following the video blog, you’ll know that Sourdough Baking has been an ongoing video process. One video has been completed: a bakery tour and sourdough baking process demonstration by Loni Larson of Sourhouse Breads in Fargo. A second video is nearing completion: a bakery tour and sourdough discussion with David Nepalitano of Breadico in Sioux Falls. The final bakery video was put into the editing phase this month: a video featuring Jonathon Bethony of SEYLOU Bakery in Washington D.C.

Felt a little creative and tested out the green screen.

The Durum Foods Course video needs include pre-recorded lectures that are edited into a professional-looking video. A special tribute to Mark Fowler was created as a thank you for his years of service and dedication to the wheat industry.

Feedmilling 101 is a new on-demand course. Filming occurred last month, and this month the videos went into editing mode. Each video will be part of a feedmill tour series focusing on a different piece of equipment in the NCI Feedmill. Feedmill Manager Shane Mueller is the expert giving an overview of how to use the equipment and discussing variations that may be found at other feedmills.

As a bonus to the on-demand course video work, the NCI video crew created a promo video for the upcoming Barley to Beer online course. Check it out below.

Conference Videos:

In case you missed it, NCI has added conference hosting to its list of services. Last year, NCI debuted two conferences: Ancient Grains Conference and Next 5 Years Conference. Ancient Grains is making its return again this year. A promo video was created to highlight this year’s event.

New to the radar is a joint conference hosted by NCI and AURI titled “Fermented Foods Conference.” This conference is coming up soon on May 18th in the Hilton Minneapolis/St. Paul hotel/airport. Once again, a promo video was created to highlight the speakers and key topics of this new conference.

What to Expect Next:

As mentioned, April is the last “prep” month before the courses and events start rolling in on the calendar. Naturally, what can be expected next will be plenty of videos from the live-in-action courses.

One of the 2023 video goals is to showcase in-person courses through short videos of what the participants are learning in the hands-on demonstrations.

The NCI video production team is looking forward to a busy summer of shoots. The team will be expanding this summer with the spring Video Production Intern, Seth, extending his internship into the summer. We are excited to see what is to come.
