What's New at NCI?

2008 Pomeroy Press Conference
July 1, 2008 -- ND Congressman Earl Pomeroy (center) held a press conference at NCI to highlight tax relief for retired farmers and landowners who receive Conservation Reserve Program payments. He was joined by Allen Orwick, (left), a ND accountant with extensive experience in agriculture taxes, and Robert Carlson, (right), president of ND Farmers Union. In 2003, the IRS stated that CRP payments to retired farmers were subject to self-employment taxes, which Pomeroy argued is misguided. Historically CRP payments were treated as rental property, not self-employment income. When IRS refused to reverse course, Pomeroy secured relief for retired farmers when his bill to provide tax fairness for CRP payments was included in the Farm Bill that became law earlier this month.
