Northern Crops Council Re-Elects Kaae as Chair

 

Fargo, N.D. – Northern Crops Council (NCC), the governing board of the Northern Crops Institute, elected Brian Kaae, a producer from Dagmar, Mont., to his second one-year term as chair. Kaae represents the Montana Wheat and Barley Committee. The election occurred at the NCC's annual reorganizational meeting on June 29, 2004.

Matt Mechtel, a producer from Page, N.D., will continue in his second one-year term as vice chair. Mechtel represents the North Dakota Soybean Council.

Sherwood Peterson, a retired producer from Sabin, Minn., is past chair after serving as council chair in 2002-03 and as a Council member for two three-year terms. Peterson represented the Minnesota Soybean Growers Association.

The Council also re-elected Jennifer Tesch of SK Food International, Fargo, to her second three-year term on the council. She is in one of two council positions designated for food processors.

Laird Larson, South Dakota Wheat Commission, and Ed Loraas, U.S. Durum Growers Association, are new Council members.

Larson is a producer from Clark, S.D., who will fill the term vacated upon the death of Richard Kuecker, Webster, S.D. Loraas, a producer from the Fairdale, N.D., area, is in his first three-year term.

Other Northern Crops Council members and the boards they represent are:

Mark Askegaard, Fargo, Minnesota Soybean Research and Promotion Council;

James Burbidge, Mohall, N.D., North Dakota Wheat Commission;

Doyle Burkhardt, Guelph, N.D., North Dakota Oilseed Council;

Ellsworth Danielson, Fosston, Minn., Minnesota Wheat Research and Promotion Council;

Richard Groven, Northwood, N.D., North Dakota Barley Council; and

Ray Lottie, Rollag, Minn., General Mills, Inc.

The President of North Dakota State University and the North Dakota Commissioner of Agriculture have permanent positions on the Council. President Joseph Chapman and Commissioner Roger Johnson currently fill these positions.

Northern Crops Institute supports regional agriculture and value-added processing by conducting educational and technical programs that expand and maintain domestic and international markets for northern-grown crops. The Institute is funded through legislative appropriations from Minnesota, North Dakota, and South Dakota, and by commodity check-off dollars in those three states and Montana.
